An urban farm and cafe in the heart of Sydney. That was all I needed to know. I could barely contain myself, imagining what a carefully crafted cafe meal using fresh seasonal produce would taste like.
Acre Eatery is located at Camperdown Commons in the Sydney suburb of Camperdown. They replaced the former bowling greens with farmland, allowing the eatery to source fresh produce from their onsite partner Pocket City Farms (supplemented with produce from nearby Sydney farms).
They have a dog running around and some chickens in a pen which add to the country vibe.
The indoor dining area (open for lunch and dinner) looks beautiful, you could easily host a wedding reception there. The wooden floorboards, white chairs, ample natural light, vases of eucalyptus and stoneware plates giving it a distinctly Scandinavian vibe (swoon!).
There are plenty of tables to choose from outdoors if you have come for breakfast.
The breakfast menu consists of lots of freshly squeezed juices and sourdough toast-based dishes.
My mum said that the coffee was really good. I tried the Green Juice which was delicious; it reminded me of the light green Starburst jelly babies. It contained apples, kale and celery which are all in season right now. The addition of mint made it very refreshing.
Making the most of the mushrooms in season, I tried the Panfried Wild Mushrooms with Sourdough Toast, Poached Egg and Béarnaise. It was beautifully presented, full of flavour but also quite rich; I recommend sharing this one.
The Acre Pit Smoked Beans with Sourdough was delicious! It was the perfect combination of smokey and sweet. It was served with a delicious cultured butter which I enjoyed as it was the weekend (everything in moderation).
On your way out, don’t forget to pick up some freshly picked seasonal produce. Check out those gorgeous eggplants which are in season right now.
I can’t wait to see the delicious produce that Pocket City Farms will have next time I visit.
Acre also has a shipping container cafe which serves takeaway foods and coffee. I hope that I am in the area sometime soon so I can drop by for something scrumptious to go.
Have you tried any of the other menu items at Acre Eatery? If so, let me know! If you have any other cafe suggestions I would love to hear them.
