How I Cook Rolled Oats – Quick, No Fuss, No Mess

Apple, Walnut and Cinnamon Rolled Oats

Oats are super good for you. They contain a special type of fibre (Beta-glucan) which:

  • reduces the absorption of cholesterol from food
  • keeps you feeling fuller for longer
  • is digested slowly, giving you sustained energy and keeping your blood sugar levels steady

However not all oats are equal.

  • Quick oats are finely cut so they cook faster. Consequently they are quickly digested, so you feel hungry again sooner.
  • Rolled oats are thicker, slowly digested, keeping your blood sugar levels steady so you are not starving by lunch time. Unfortunately, they take much longer to cook.

I never had much success cooking rolled oats on the stove in a saucepan, it took way too long and created more dirty dishes to wash. I have also tried cooking raw rolled oats in the microwave but they would overflow and make a mess before they had a chance to cook through.

(Out of pure laziness) I discovered my cheat way of cooking rolled oats that only requires 1 minute 11 seconds in the microwave.

Cheat’s Rolled Oats

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup – 1 cup milk of your choice (depending on how milky you like it)

Rolled Oats Ingredients

Method:

1. Add 1/2 cup rolled oats to a deep bowl (so that it doesn’t overflow in the microwave). Add enough milk until it just reaches the top of the oats.Rolled Oats with Milk

2. Cover the bowl in glad wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight (so that you have a quick and easy breakfast in the morning).Soaking the rolled oats in the refrigerator

3. The oats should have absorbed the liquid, so all you need to do is warm them up in the microwave. I microwave them for 1 minute, 11 seconds (simply because it is easier to press the 1 button 3 times – 1:11 –  than it is to type 1 minute 10 seconds). For your microwave it might be different depending on the microwave’s age and wattage.Microwaving the Rolled Oats

4. Add more milk if you would like. I usually add chopped apples, walnuts and cinnamon. You can add whatever nuts, fruits or spices you prefer.Apple, Walnut and Cinnamon Rolled Oats
